Course Overview

This introduction course will provides students with an overview of the fashion design industry. Through a combination of lectures, hands-on projects, and field trips, students will explore the fundamentals of fashion design, including design principles, garment construction, and industry standards. This course is designed for individuals who are interested in pursuing a career in fashion design or those who want to gain a better understanding of the fashion industry.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will be able to:

Apply industry-standard sketching techniques: Draw proportional fashion figures (croquis) and flat technical sketches by hand and using basic CAD tools (e.g., Adobe Illustrator).
Construct basic garments: Demonstrate pattern drafting/draping, sewing, and finishing techniques for 1–2 simple garments (e.g., skirt, shift dress).
Analyze textiles: Select appropriate fabrics based on weight, drape, and structure for specific designs.
Develop original concepts: Create mood boards, color palettes, and design briefs inspired by research (trends, cultural themes, art movements).
Iterate through prototyping: Translate 2D sketches into 3D toiles/mock-ups, refining designs based on fit and functionality.
Build cohesive collections: Design a collections that reflect creativity and innovation through the use of basic techniques achieved through shape, color, silhouette, proportion and fabrication.

Map the fashion ecosystem: Identify roles (designer, patternmaker, buyer) and key industry stages (concept → production → retail).
Apply ethical frameworks: Evaluate material choices (e.g., organic cotton vs. polyester) and design strategies for waste reduction (zero-waste patterns, upcycling).
Navigate trends: Analyze trend forecasting sources (WGSN, Pantone) and adapt insights into original work.
Present designs professionally: Utilize information and communication technologies to research, evaluate, create, and communicate in formation as it relates to fashion design concepts at an basic level.
Participate in critiques: Give/receive constructive feedback on functionality, aesthetics, and market viability.
Document process: Maintain a design journal tracking research, iterations, and technical specifications.
